Volunteer: YCS at the Italian Street Painting Expo 2026 - Chalk-A-Lot Volunteer OpportunitiesYouth Community Service invites youth volunteers to support the beloved chalk art event - Italian Street Painting Expo at the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts during the weekend of August 22-23. At the event youth will assist children under the age of 12 to create their own 2'x 2' chalk drawing and other event support activities. See the shift information below.
The location is outdoors at University Ave, and Tasso St. downtown Palo Alto where the street is blocked off for the creation of beautiful chalk art pictures drawn directly on the pavement by both professional artists and young children during the weekend - in centuries-old tradition of Madonnari Italian Street Painting. Volunteers under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Saturday shifts: Street Taping: (Sat only) 6:45am – 9:00am – 8 Youth Volunteers needed. Set up and put down tape outlines for chalk paintings and artists squares. Kids Chalk-A-Lot: 3 Students each shift. Total 9 students per day. 10:00am – 12:15pm 12:00pm – 3:15pm 3:00pm – 6:00pm. Assist kids under the age of 12 to make their own 2’x 2’ chalk drawing. Sunday shifts: Kids Chalk-A-Lot: 3 Students each shift. Total 9 students per day. 10:00am – 12:15pm 12:00pm – 3:15pm 3:00pm – 6:00pm. Assist kids under the age of 12 to make their own 2’x 2’ chalk drawing. Street Clean Up:(Sun only) 5:30pm to 7:30pm – 6 Youth Volunteers. Collect and clean sponsor signs, remove all tape and miscellaneous litter from the street. If you are deciding which track to join, please take this survey. See a summary of the tracks below: Commitments:Meet in person at the YCS office (3990 Ventura Ct Palo Alto) twice per month on Thursdays. Meet virtually twice per month on a weeknight that works for your group.Collaborate to plan, promote, and carry out one service project per semester. PEER LEADERS - Track 2 Description: Peer Leader Track 2 members support service projects planned by Youth Connect Peer Leaders. At monthly in person meetings, PL2s members will sign up for tasks that are most interesting to them, earning a minimum of 1 service hour at the meeting. You may also choose to complete additional work on the service project outside of meeting time, up to 4 hours/month. Tasks might include research, printing and preparing brochures, hanging fliers, creating social media posts, and more. PL2s will also pick one youth-led project each semester to support in person. For example, if Peer Leaders have planned six different events for December, you will choose at least one event to attend in person.Commitment:Attend in person meetings once per month on a Thursday at the YCS office in Palo Alto (3990 Ventura Ct Palo Alto CA). Attend at least one youth-led project per semester in personOPTIONAL: Earn service hours by completing work for youth-led service projects outside of meeting times, up to 4 hours/month.
